How to view the timeline on the Google Photos map

One of the most useful features of Google Photos is the ability to view a map with the location of your photos. So you can use it.

Customize or disable Google Photos suggestions

To work, the Google Photos timeline tool uses the camera GPS data, waypoints and location history. Therefore, first of all you should make sure you have Google's location history activated, as it is the source of information that Google Photos will use when generating the chronology.

That said, the process for view your photos on the Google Photos map are as follows:

  1. Open the Google Photos app on your mobile. It is recommended to keep the application updated to the latest version.
  2. Tap on the "Search" tab, indicated by a magnifying glass icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen.
  3. In the "Places" section, tap on the "Your Map" box.

In this way, you will see a map that reflects those points where you have taken photos over time. It works like a heat map, so those red areas represent the parts of the map in which the most photos have been taken, and the blue ones in which the least.

In the lower section of screen, a panel with all photos ordered by date. If we move up or down, the map will change its position to represent the area in which the photographs were taken.

Don't want to see your timeline? So you can deactivate it

If you don't want Google Photos to keep saving your locations on the map, you always can disable timeline. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In the timeline section, tap on the three dot icon in the upper right corner.
  2. Within the options menu, deactivate the "Show your private timeline" switch.

This way you can disable the Google Photos timeline.

By deactivating this option, you will no longer be able to see what areas of the world have you traveled through your photos. Luckily you will be able to continue activating this tool whenever you want.
