2 out of 3 Spaniards admit to having believed a WhatsApp hoax

WhatsApp continues to be a source of worrying hoaxes.

WhatsApp is a great communication mechanism but also a constant drain of lies, especially for those less familiar with the internet and its amount of trollsAlthough everything is said, they are not the only ones.

According to a survey carried out by the insurer Línea Directa, 70% of Spaniards admit to having believed information that came to them through WhatsApp and that, finally, turned out to be false. In relation to this, in addition, an overwhelming 90% of those surveyed consider that knowingly distributing false information should be grounds for sanction.

This study "Homo Digitalis: The risks of the use of technology in everyday life" aims to identify the "technological fears" of the Spanish. Among the most repeated are hoaxes from social networks, cyber attacks and providing personal data over the network and the use made of them.

Thousands of hoaxes are shared daily through WhatsApp.

With the appearance of Covid-19 we have suffered not only a health pandemic, but a fake news storm which has led to a general distrust among the population. We are concerned about the many hoaxes that come to us every day from different sources and also the not being able to tell them apart. Only 31% of Spaniards claim to be able to identify false news without problems.

Given this, not everything is negative. A resounding 80% of respondents they prefer to be informed in the media because they consider them more reliable than isolated news they receive through WhatsApp or other social networks. In this line, again 9 out of 10 ask for it to be sanctioned to whoever disseminates this type of content.

On the contrary, despite the importance for Spaniards of truthful information from authorized sources, only 16% would be willing to pay for information from professional media and a surprising 21% consider that the information of their friends and WhatsApp groups is more reliable than that of the media.
