US suspends blockade of TikTok

Bytedance, the company responsible for TikTok, I had until yesterday (November 12) to sell its assets in the United States. Days earlier, the Chinese company assured that they had no news from the Trump administration about the impending ban.

As we can read in the Wall Street Journal, the United States Department of Commerce has issued a notice in which they inform that said prohibition is suspended. This court ruling comes days after TikTok requested an extension from the US courts, and thus continue preparing the sale of its assets in the US.

"Hypothetical Threats"

We recall that the government of Donald Trump gave this ultimatum to TikTok in September, claiming that this platform represented a threat in terms of national security for the United States.

Now Judge Wendy Beetlestone (of the Federal Court of Philadelphia) has ruled that "the government's own descriptions of the threat to national security posed by TikTok are hypothetical."

TikTok has around 100 million users in the United States, and the Trump administration accused the service of its great ability to obtain personal data and use it against the interests of its country (accusations that TikTok denied).

Since the beginning of fall, TikTok has been in no man's land, without knowing what would happen when the scheduled date arrives and trying to find buyers for their US assets in order to continue operating the US.

Although Trump still does not want to admit defeatEverything indicates that Joe Biden will be sworn in as president of the United States on January 20. Perhaps this turnaround in American politics has influenced this change of mind.
